Framing

If you read part 1 of our series, you'd be all up to date on the benefits of our steel skid foundation and how it attaches to the ground. If you haven't had a chance to read that yet, you can check it out here. Once the skid is fabricated and assembled, it's time for the fun part. Framing. This is the phase when we get to see the really cabin come to life. This treated, termite resistant pine lays the foundation for insulation, internal ply cladding, and the exterior corrugated iron cladding. Its the bones of the skeleton. It's important here to note that the highest quality materials are used in order to provide the most structural support possible for the cabin, given it will be moved from location to location.

The first time we set foot in a framed version of the cabin we were taken aback by how much space you really achieve from the added metre of width on the foundation. It was also the first time we saw the floor-plan come to life. Finally a 'tiny home' with room to move, live, hang-out.

This is also an opportunity to get an idea on the feel of window and door locations. Pictured above is the hardwood framing for the three part bi-fold door installation. We felt it was important to choose a bi-fold door over a conventional sliding / stacking door to provide that added bit of connection to the outdoors when everything is opened up. It creates a true indoor / outdoor feel.

The insulation process begins after the framing is complete. Insulation helps to regulate the temperature inside the cabin and keep it comfortable during both hot and cold weather and is installed between the framing members, creating a barrier that slows the transfer of heat through the walls, roof, and floor.

That's it from us this week on the Follow a Build series. Next up, interior premium ply cladding coats the inside of the cabin, ceiling to floor. Oh baby. Are you interested in getting your own Zinc Cabin?
